Reasons as to why people do not get hired by employers:

  1. No references on your CV. Having at least four references on your CV is important in order to make your employer aware of the fact that you do have experience in the job you are seeking, you have proof of your abilities and that you as an employee are aware of the responsibilities expected of you in your field of work.
  2. You are under qualified for the job. Being under qualified for a job means that you currently do not have the skills or experience needed for the position which you have applied for; however it does allow for room to grow.
  3. Your interviewing skills need to be improved. It is important to bring a copy of your CV with you to your interview as well as prepared questions about the job you are interviewing for. Practice common interview questions. During the interview, it is important to be consistently friendly, show an interest in your interviewer, ask questions which gives the interviewer a chance to speak about their favourite subject… themselves.
  4. You have not displayed your skills, talent or knowledge enough. During an interview or as part of your CV, it is crucial to include your skills, talent and knowledge to demonstrate how you will be able to positively make a difference in the work place.
  5. You haven’t done any research/lack knowledge on the actual business or the industry. It is very important for first time employees such as matriculants or varsity students to do research on the business which they would like to work with in order to seem prepared for the interview as well as to gain knowledge for the company which they are keen on working for.
  6. You have bad mouthed your previous employer. During an interview, make sure not to include any negative comments about your previous employer or the company.
  7. You do not look the part. A formal dress code is crucial during an interview as it shows the interviewer/employer that you are serious about the job that you are seeking and that you take the interview seriously.
  8. Lacking personality during an interview. Even though it is a formal interview, having a bit of personality and making a joke here and there can make you seem interesting and may differentiate you from other candidates.
