Knowing the difference between small business and big corporate:

Small companies often focus on a niche market, while larger companies tend to offer more products and services to a wider variety of consumers. A business’s size can be measured by the number of employees that work for it or by total sales within a defined period. Many small companies start as sole proprietorships or partnerships, which give a sole owner or a group of owners complete control over a company. Owners of sole proprietorships and partnerships pay income taxes for business profit on their personal income tax returns. They are also legally liable for business debts.

Advantages of working for a large company:

  1. Many perks come with working for a large company:
    Any additional incentives such as paid bonuses, health benefits and travel expenses are included when working for a large company. Due to the fact that the company is large, the company is usually able to negotiate a better deal regarding salaries.
  2. The company is able to provide resources:
    Large companies are able to provide their employees with resources such as: higher salaries,bonuses, advanced technology and internal training.
  3. Structure and order:
    There are usually set training programs in place, so you learn all the things you need to do to get your job done. Training and policy manuals help guide you. And, there are almost always clear-cut procedures in place to help you make decisions.
  4. Stability.
    Large companies tend to be stable and assure employees that they will always be paid large companies usually have access to cash reserves.

Disadvantages of working for a large company:

  1. Creative thinking is discouraged
    Many large companies are usually less keen on change to avoid any risks and maintain stability. Thinking outside the box would be discouraged.
  2. Advancement.
    Working in a large company means that there is competition everywhere. It is difficult to be promoted in a large company.
  3. It is difficult to be seen:
    In a large company, among many employees, it may be difficult for you and your efforts to make a difference at the company. When you’re one employee of hundreds or even thousands.

Advantages of working in a small company:

  1. Ability to shift:
    Small companies are able to adapt into something new or similar should there be a change in trend in the market, when economic circumstances change, or the business model is failing.
  2. Creative thinking is encouraged:
    Small companies tend to encourage creative “outside the box” thinking and are more likely to embrace change and even radical ideas.
  3. Many opportunities:
    Working in a small company sometimes means working as different roles at times. This allows for growth and there is also a good chance you will work closely with company leaders, which can help you become a better employee because you will understand how business works on a level that others can’t.
  4. Community:
    Working in a small business allows for you to know your team members well which creates a sense of community in the work place.

Disadvantages of working in a small company:

  1. Less advancement:
    Due to the fact that the company is small, it is less likely for forward momentum to occur in your career. You have to wait for someone to leave.
  2. Fewer resources:
    Small companies tend to generate less revenue which means fewer resources.
  3. Fewer benefits:
    Fewer resources leads to fewer benefits. Most smaller companies do not provide the same benefits as larger companies such as: paid bonuses, health benefits, retirement plans and travel expenses.
  4. Less security, policy and procedure.
    Small companies may experience their consumer’s tastes have changed or that their biggest account left due to instability. Some small businesses tend to have less formal policies and procedures in place.
